What types of storm shelters can I choose from?
Generally, there are 3 types of storm shelters: underground garage shelters, concrete shelters, and steel safe rooms. Depending on your needs, one of these storm shelters will be sufficient for your need. There are a number of factors to consider when deciding which type of storm shelter is good for your family, including the size of the shelter/safe room, where it would be installed, and what your budget would allow. To help you make a decision, we wrote an article outlining the benefits of each and you can read by clicking here.
Regardless of the type of storm shelter you choose, it’s important to go with a reputable company to do the installation. Here at Preferred Shelters, we build all of our shelters and safe rooms for safety, comfort and long life expectancy. Our goal is to provide a space where you and your family can survive a tornado.
How much space would I need in my house?
While storm shelters take up some space, it all depends on the type of storm shelter that you choose. The underground shelter, for example, would occupy space that isn’t being used while a concrete storm shelter may take up a bit of space outside. The other factor to consider is the size of the shelter, which depends on the number of people who would be sheltered at a given time.
Is there financing available to help offset the cost?
Being in the storm shelter business has given us experience with finding customers financing options. On our financing page we outline details on what options you may have. In a nutshell, you have these options:
- traditional financing,
- credit union financing,
- grants and rebates
How long does the installation take?
Most installations take just a few hours to complete. Usually we’d plan a storm shelter installation so that it does not inconvenience you. We have a team of professional masonry and installation experts so we’re able to address your timing needs. Depending on the type of storm shelter you select, there may be some preparation needed. You may need to call and confirm the gas lines on your property, for example. At times you may need to move some things around your property where the storm shelter would go.
Do I get maintenance or servicing?
The amazing thing about these storm shelters is that they need little maintenance. We provide maintenance and servicing upon request. As a preparation procedure it is good to inspect your storm shelter or safe room before the storm season begins, so you can address any issues you may discover ahead of time.
How well are storm shelters tested? How safe is it?
A good storm shelter or safe room is put through a simulation of a tornado. At Preferred Shelters, all of our OKC storm shelters are tested at Texas Tech National Wind Institute and they all exceed FEMA standards. Our underground storm shelters and above ground safe rooms are some of the most innovative on the market today. Our durable, patented Steel Garage Storm Shelter PASSED the Texas Tech F5 Tornado Rated Impact Test with flying colors.
